The Research Group on Comparative Analysis of Social Inequality was established in 1992 at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN). The founding members were Kazimierz M. Słomczyński, Wojciech Zaborowski, Krystyna Janicka, and Bogdan W. Mach. In the 1990s, the team has conducted research on the relationship of individuals’ location in the social structure and psychological functioning under systemic change. This research resulted in a book “Mental Adjustment to the Post-Communist System in Poland” (Kazimierz M. Słomczyński, 1999). The main scientific focus of CASIN is on comparative analysis of social structure both in a cross-time perspective (panel studies) and a cross-national perspective. Currently, the most important data collection project is the Polish Panel Survey, POLPAN 1988-2013, carried out on a representative sample of adult Poles in five year intervals.
The Research Group on Comparative Analysis of Social Inequality maintains close international contacts with research centers in Europe and the United States. In the 1990s, the team initiated a long-standing collaboration with The Ohio State University (OSU). It was developed first as a project titled Social Change in Eastern Europe: A Research and Training Program, and then as Cross-National Studies: Interdisciplinary Research and Training Program (CONSIRT).
The Group’s recent publications include: W. Wesołowski, K. M. Słomczyński (eds), “Tożsamość, zaufanie, integracja. Polska i Europa” (2012);
K. M. Słomczyński, W. Wesolowski, J.K. Dubrow (eds), „National and European? Polish Political Elite in Comparative Perspective” (2010); K. M. Słomczyński (ed.), “Social Patterns of Being Political” (2000); K. M. Słomczyński (ed.), “Social Structure. Changes and Linkages” (2002). The most significant research projects are described here:
We are now conducting the sixth, 2013 wave of the POLPAN panel study as a part of the project Social Structure in Poland, 1988-2013
