The POLPAN Conference will be held on March 19, 2014, in Warsaw

The conference will present and discuss the Polish Panel Survey (POLPAN), and will place this study in cross-national perspective. POLPAN spans 25 years, thus providing key data about the Polish society and its change since 1988.  A national representative sample of Polish citizens was first interviewed in 1988, and re-interviewed in 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. New samples were also added beginning with 1998.

Conference participants will present analyses of the 1988-2013 POLPAN data that test theoretically informed hypotheses about the relationship between individuals’ social characteristics, their personal biographies and Poland’s social structure. Invited speakers will share their comments regarding the comparability of the POLPAN data with other datasets collected in Poland and in other countries. We will also discuss methodological and ethical issues that arise in the administration of panel studies, particularly those conducted over a long time span. This one-day conference will be followed by a two-day workshop that will train selected participants in using the specific features of the POLPAN 1988-2013 database. Among others, workshop participants will use the SPSS and STATA statistical software packages to familiarize themselves with the set-up of the data, including the different types of panels.
